Why extract images from PDFs?

PDFs are excellent containers for multi-page documents, but they are not always the best format for every downstream task. Presentations, social media posts, web articles, and design mockups all expect standalone image files rather than embedded PDF pages.

Extracting pages as images also simplifies annotation workflows. Many whiteboard and note-taking apps accept PNG or JPEG but cannot import PDF pages directly. Converting pages to images bridges that gap without losing visual fidelity.

Load and preview the document

Use the view toggle to switch between grid mode — which shows many thumbnails at once for quick scanning — and list mode, which displays larger previews for detailed inspection. Both views update in real time as you select or deselect pages.

There is no file size limit enforced by MergeCraft. Large documents with hundreds of pages load smoothly because rendering is handled by background Web Workers that keep the interface responsive.

Choose the right format

MergeCraft offers two output formats: PNG and JPEG. Each serves a different purpose, and choosing correctly saves time and storage.

Pick PNG when you need crisp graphics, lossless quality, or transparent backgrounds. PNG is ideal for diagrams, screenshots, text-heavy pages, and any content that will be layered over other graphics in a design tool. The trade-off is larger file sizes.

Choose JPEG when you want lightweight files for slide decks, web galleries, email attachments, or quick sharing on messaging apps. JPEG uses lossy compression, so file sizes shrink dramatically — often to one-fifth of the equivalent PNG. Adjust the quality slider between 60 and 95 percent to find the right balance between size and clarity.

A practical rule: if the page contains mostly text or line art, use PNG. If it contains photographs or full-color illustrations where minor compression artifacts are acceptable, use JPEG.

Set the right DPI

DPI (dots per inch) controls the resolution of your exported images. Higher DPI means more pixels, sharper detail, and larger file sizes. Lower DPI produces smaller files that are faster to share but less detailed when zoomed in.

Use 150 DPI for quick reviews, social media thumbnails, and internal drafts where speed matters more than print quality. This is the fastest export setting and produces the smallest files.

Use 200 DPI for presentation slides, web content, and screen-based reading. This is a good all-purpose setting that balances quality and file size.

Use 300 DPI for print-ready output, professional portfolios, and archival copies where maximum detail is essential. Files at this resolution are significantly larger but reproduce beautifully on paper.

Export what you need

MergeCraft gives you flexible export options. Click individual page thumbnails to download single images. Select multiple pages and download them one by one, or bundle the entire selection into a ZIP archive for a single organized download.

The Select All, Invert, and Clear buttons make it easy to manage large selections. For example, select all pages, then deselect the cover and blank pages to export only the content pages.

While exports run, the rest of the interface stays responsive because rendering is isolated in Web Workers. A progress indicator shows estimated time remaining so you can plan your workflow. MergeCraft names exported files consistently with page numbers, keeping handoffs organized.

All rendering happens locally in your browser. The source PDF and exported images never touch a remote server, which means sensitive financial reports, medical records, and legal documents stay completely private.

When you close the browser tab, all cached data — thumbnails, rendered pages, and temporary files — is cleared automatically. There is no residual data left on your device unless you explicitly downloaded the images.
